How to hoist a courtesy flag

I have assumed that the "twists" in this topic were those resulting from changes in the wind and boat direction that results in the flags winding around the parallel line and not tensions within the individual lines. For those that have a problem with this, the traditional solution has been to have two small blocks on the bottom of the spreader for the flag halyard. One block to have the top of the flag drawn toward and the other to lead the descending line away from the flag before leading back to the deck.

For me, with a smaller boat than the OP, I can unwrap the flags from the deck so I've never added a second block on my spreader.

In 40 years of sailing never had this problem. Still do not understand what is going on. We have three separate blocks on each side of our lower spreader for flags and whatnot. each lead to a separate belaying pin. The pins are slotted into a wooden bar attached to the two lower shrouds. Works perfectly. Halyards are attached to belaying pins at the main's base. Old school but extremely effective.

Assuming the twisting is like this which has never been a problem for us. Wind changes, flags twists the 2 lines etc. the flag still lowers and untwist no problem..

Oh No! I've never had a wheel covered. What am I in for if I come across one? Snaps, zippers and ties? 'oh my!

We used Velcro to close our wheel cover. Good to cover the wheel if its wooden. If its a stainless destroyer type, then does not need a cover. Ours was an antique bronze spokes affair with wooden rim. Plenty of sites will show how to make your own wheel cover.

Mine is stainless with cord wrapping... sharp knife works best...

Should the wheel cover discussion be beyond the intellectual capacity of those here (including myself), may I suggest a topic like

how to wrap a sheet around a self-tailing winch? Including step.by-step instructions, several homemade videos and, of course, the valued advice from the old salts who inhabit this forum. They should start with the words

"well, back when i was young and wrapping a sheet.................."

Well,in my youth aboard the family schooner, there were no winches. You pulled, tighten, pulled. Belay pins and dead eyes mostly. Just old blocks and tackles.

That is when 'Swigging' comes into it's own, I learned on a 35 ton (displacement) 1890 something build Bristol Channel Pilot gaff cutter, no winches, usual crew of one man, one boy, but later, when in private hands, had a full crew of 14, including me. Loads of old bollocks, and big tackles ( on some of the fit young crew) mind
