how to cut wire for lifelines

i am making life lines for a hunter and bought the johnson fittings and tool to crimp but how to cut the line to get it in the fitting

Wrap with electrical tape before cutting to keep strands from fraying.

Would a Dremel sized cut-off tool be adequate? Or would that just be wildly underpowered?

...guess late to try and convince you to make out of dyneema.

Timely. I just replaced mine with dyneema a couple days ago. Easy peasy.

What ever happened to wire shears for this small wire... like I have used for the past 45 years or so? I don't think you will see pros using dremels or grinders in this application!

I’ve done this with a hammer and chisel against a steel block anvil type of setup.
In logging camp years ago we would cut 1 1/4 inch cable laying it over the sharp edge of a double bit axe pounding on it with a large hammer. Didn’t take long to cut and taping first close to the cut is a good idea as well.

Dremel or preferably grinder is OK if you don't want to buy an expensive tool you will only use occasionally. I have all three but would use the grinder with grinding, cutting and sanding discs the most.

I think most of us carry bolt cutters, shears or something to cut the rigging loose should we lose it, no?
Cut through my old lifelines like butter.

We cut ours with a grinder that uses a 1/16 thick x 3" wheel. The electric die grinder costs about $45 at harbor freight. It is like a large dremel and is incredibly useful for other cutting with different attachments. you would need an attachment to hold the wheel but do not bother with the harbor freight one, it's made poorly. I used one from Ace hardware- much better. They also have an electric cutoff that is similar but less useful for $24.
