I would say significant, even if he's got a "dog leg" head on the mainsail... Or if it's an ex racing boat with alot of canvas... maybe not much for cruising....

The OP specifically said that the mast was shortened so that it could cruise the ICW. Not to account for heavy winds, or to better balance the boat, or anything else like that. Just to fit under bridges. To me, an amazingly DUMB reason for shortening the mast, when there are scads of boats out there that were specifically designed with short enough masts to begin with.
