How many man hours for AwlGrip/nonskid?

35 foot sailboat, normal amount of har ware/ fittings, standard amount of stress cracks etc. How many actual man hours to properly awlgrip and non skid a deck? Are we talking hundreds?

No. Masking is time consuming.

Stress cracks in gelcoat may be ignored or repaired. [repair involves sanding, filling, color matching, and does take a while]

If you use acrylmeric sportcote (Australian), after masking, you roll it on, water cleanup. One day or less for your decks (our boat is somewhat larger, but it was one day). However, it is best to apply it on a day when the night that follows will not be dewy. Nonetheless, IMO, wonderful stuff.

Hard to clean, but mega-sticky. I actually had to take some sandpaper and smoothe it on the afterdeck, 'cause it was too aggressive to sit on to put on my fins before swimming.

It's far less expensive than Awlgrip, too.

If I am reading you correctly you used this product on all your decks or just non slip areas.

Ann

Sorry I didn't make myself clear. I will be painting over gel coat not repairing it. The whole deck is getting redone.

We just finished a complete paint job top to bottom on our cat with Awlcraft 2000. The nonskid took us 2 days, 1 to tape it all off and 1 to put the nonskid on. Click image for larger version

Wow that's unbelievable fast. Did you sand and prime as well or just slap it on? It looks nice.

Re: How many man hours for AwlGrip/nonskid?

Last summer I Awlgripped the non non-skid areas of our Morgan 383 (38'), including the house, bullwarks, & cockpit. I did a little gel coat repair. I applied a few coats of primer and 2 coats of finish, with sanding in between coats. Materials were about $1000 at retail thru the marina. (There are discount paint suppliers on the 'net that I'd recommend using. I bought from the marina for the free advice and paint samples they provided.)
My job took far longer than I expected, and came out poorer than expected (but a WHOLE LOT BETTER than the old, weathered gel coat.) It's a 5' paint job (ie looks good from 5' away.)
The marina charges at least $10K for similar work (@ $72/hour.)
I'm glad I did it but won't do another one.

Re: How many man hours for AwlGrip/nonskid?

The Acrylmeric SportCote is on only the non-skid areas. We worked together and Jim masked and painted all in one long day, IIRC. We painted right over the old non-skid, on advice from the tech rep from where we bought it. It's about 4 years old now, and still working well, although it looks a little thin in some of the spots it ran when the dew arrived.

Yes, you are talking hundreds of hours. At least if you are looking for a yacht quality finish you are.

Stress fractures cannot be simply ground, filled, and faired. They will reappear if you do that. They must be ground and glassed. You did say "properly". Consider working at what you do best to make money with which to pay a pro instead of beating your head against it. The learning curve is steep, much specialized equipment is required, and you will get a warranty on the work that way. It will also take much less time, leaving you more for sailing.

Re: How many man hours for AwlGrip/nonskid?

@unbusted67,
The whole boat was sanded but only where the top coat went was primed. The non skid was rolled on and only took one coat. We spent 20 days doing the top coat, 3 coats and 2 coats bottom paint. Click image for larger version
