Re: How Do You Pronounce " Dorade "

Since it is a French word, one would assume this is the correction pronunciation for dorade. Click on the pronunciation by splOuf shown at bottom left on the link.

follow the link on post 36. I don't think Olin Stephens was French. The history credits him for the invention but does not say where he came up withthe name although the boat it was on was named Dorade, commisioned by his father. We will stuff our head withthe darndest data when this is done.

Those are vents. The door aide had a partition sealed at the deck. The air intake was raised behind the partition limiting water intrusion. I think it is called a dorage box.

Dorade was designed to be as flush decked as possible. Be strong and limit water intrusion. All of Which limited ventilation. Hence the dorade box and the fine flush decks. I think herteshoff came up with deck prisms. Not the prism but the idea of away to get natural light below. This was needed as hatches were designed out dorades were providing ventilation and the crew depressed. Way before sun lamps. That's the way I remember history but I'm gettin forgetful

You'd better not go there, at least not on this forum. Although the word has various levels of, shall we say, obsenity. Such as, one can be "rooted" if one is "buggered" or very tired. But I'd better go no further -- probably gone too far already and may be banned from the site. The original post was about dorades by we seem to have wandered wildly off course.

Re: How Do You Pronounce " Dorade "

I can't fathom why that would matter.

But on this dorade box issue. This has been discussed many times in the past. It seems to me that the boat name would have been Dorade ... like volare, sort of, with 3 syllables.

Who would name a boat Door Aid? Yeah, somebody probably would but not the designer of this gorgeous vessel.

Having worked on the boat I can tell you that the captain and crew definitely call the boat Door Aid.
