Hood Seafurl 3250 - rebuild?
Boat has 2 3250s, and both are hard to furl/unfurl. I know jack about furlers - but it always seems to be the case: At first I know nothing until I tackle a project, and afterwards, I'm an EXPERT!
![]() Talked to Hood, and just the bearings are $500 per furler... 4 on top, 2 at the bottom. Any thoughts as to whether or not I should tackle this? TIA, Bill

I've rebuilt a small schaefer it was pretty easy, but like I say it was small and I don't know that it would be any comparison to a larger hood model. I am however the type of person that would rather spend a lot of time and sometimes money learning how to do something myself rather then paying someone to do it and not having a clue how it works.

Yeah, that drives my wife crazy... I LOVE to find out how things work. Used to drive my father crazy too - I'd take things apart to see how they worked, and then couldn't get them back together again. Thank goodness for digital cameras!

There are a few things that can cause the furler to be hard to furl and unfurl including rigging tensions.
Before I spent $500 just for bearings i would have it down for myself. You should be able to drop the sail off and get a good idea about the bearings with the roller units unloaded.

"If you break it taking it apart you're not getting another one"
![]() I'd take it apart and see if you can get a bearing make and model number you can prolly order them for a fifth of that online., I rebuilt an old jeep pulley, dealer wanted over 200, i bought the bearings for $8.50 each.
