Help me replace this ancient sliding gooseneck

My Hallberg-Rassy 33 gooseneck is caput. It may be the wrong gooseneck for this mast, or lost enough material to where it will no longer stay in the slot at certain angles. Selden recommended I purchase their universal fixed gooseneck, so I did. Unfortunately it's not universal enough - doesn't fit my mast.

Is anyone still producing a sliding gooseneck like this? Does anyone have an old one lying around they'd sell me? Three options as I see them:
  • Replace the sliding gooseneck
  • Make the Selden gooseneck work using SS or aluminum sheet
  • Have a welder add material to the original gooseneck in order*to make it work
Pictures of what I'm working with:

With the Selden gooseneck:

None of the above....

I'd take a coat hanger and bend to the mast profile. Take it to a welder and bend a piece of stainless to make a band 1/4 of the way around the mast and weld tangs to that.

Like this but oversized!

Re: Help me replace this ancient sliding gooseneck

Thanks for the tip - if I didn't already own the Selden unit that's probably what I would have done. At this point though, I may as well try and adapt it.

Re: Help me replace this ancient sliding gooseneck

Following up:

I weighed many options based on time and cost. In the end I designed a piece that would adapt the mast section to fit the gooseneck. I brought the template and a scrap piece of 10 gauge 316 to a local sheet metal shop (that usually does HVAC ducting) and had them bend it into shape for me.

The sheet metal cost me $20 and the bending cost me $80. I was being quoted between $600 - $1,200 to have a new gooseneck fabricated to fit my mast section...this solution made much more sense to me.

Anyone in the Bay Area that needs sheet metal work done I recommend Metalmen Sheet Metal located in SF. For 316, check out Alan Steel & Supply in Redwood City

Nice work with your solution. Now just get some bushing between the gooseneck toggle pin.... it shouldn't be allowed to move up and down. Are you adding reefing horns to the pin top?

Thanks Matt - yes included along with the gooseneck are reefing hooks and washers/bushings. I haven't yet put them back on but they'll be there when I set sail

Looks great! Is that the same Alan steel down on Marsh Road at the bay? I used to rummage around in those places when I was a kid. It's a lot of fun coming up with your own good solution for not too much $!

Nice solution. When you own an older boat and don't live off a trust you have to innovate.
Good on ya!

Another option would be to send the original to a foundry and have them cast another.

Sounds like the same! The road it's on is named Bayshore Rd, but it wouldn't surprise me if that was changed over the years because it's definitely located at the foot of a marsh.

Yeah if I remember right it is where Marsh Rd meets Bayshore there next to 101. Loved that place. They used to have these (air force surplus streamlined aluminum) drop tanks that I thought would make a great little one man sub. Probably a good thing I never took on that project.
Sure miss sailing on the bay.
