Hawsepipe and exposed deck core

I was in my anchor locker today to scope out a location for a solent stay reinforcement when I noticed that the cut-out for the hawsepipe has exposed core all the way around. I'm not sure if it was once sealed, and worn away by chain going in and out, or if it was never sealed at all.

In any case, I want to seal this abomination. My thought (via Don Casey) was to dig out the core all around the fitting, and fill it with epoxy loaded with colloidal silica.

Is this the right prescription?

Epoxy mixed with colloidal silica and microfibers. Then glass over with biaxial.

Be sure to wear an appropriate mask/respirator. Those thickeners are nasty stuff and should not be inhaled

I had no idea. That's great news. I was starting to worry.

Epoxy mix or even just a good pasting with 5200 smeared smooth.

Re: Hawsepipe and exposed deck core

Potential core exposure to moisture is *definitely* worrisome, but I worry less about holes like that where it goes clean through...

Kinda like an exit wound. The water has a direct path out, it's not going to pool and have all this time to weep around. This is the reason I don't care too much that my deck fills have exposed core under them. I check on them periodically from below and it also gives me some peace of mind that the core is not harboring water from an unknown source. At least in those 6 locations.

Assuming there is an actual flanged hawsepipe fixture that seats in the hole, he could probably get away without the glass over.

Re: Hawsepipe and exposed deck core

OP is seeing the core in a raw hawse hole, so glassing over is recommended.
