Has any one serviced a Barlow 20 winch?

I am working on my Grandad's Tayana 37 in Cartagena, Colombia; getting her ready to deliver to the States in the next couple of weeks. She has six Andersen winches and ONE single action Barlow 20, more than likely for the port stays'l sheet. This Barlow has out smarted me! I am at a loss as to how to disassemble it. The Anderson 46ST's, 40ST's and 28's all have manuals and I had no trouble servicing them. The Barlow has no manual, I have put a handle in it and the the shaft will lift a 1/4" but no amount of coaxing the drum will release it. Any help is greatly appreciated. It is mounted next to the companion way and mad dogs me as I come and go!

I have a few 20's, single speed, don't recall any particular problems, but there are subtle differences within each series.

I can't say about the Barlow 20s, but my Barlow 16's disassemble easily by inserting your finger into the hole where the winch handle would insert and pushing against the bottom. Just lift up on the spool while pushing your finger against the bottom.

I presume you are servicing it because it needs servicing?

Long shot but if it is not ratcheting maybe the pawls are "extended" inside and gummed up with old grease and hanging up on something in the drum.

Spray solvent/dissolver through the 1/4 opening up inside the drum and keep exercising the winch.

Something strong enough to dissolve old grease but not strong enough to screw up the boat (i.e. brake cleaner)

Thank you every one for the feed back. On the 20 there is a large flat head screw where one would insert the winch handle that holds the drum on the bearing assembly, it was just buried under teak dust from the bright work. It was fairly easy to dissasemble, clean, grease and reassemble. over engineered, to be sure, paul springs were in good working order. Now she clacks like she should. Now I have to figure out how to get 70 gallons of 6 year old diesel off the boat. No one in Cartagena is too eager to take it. Fair Winds!

Hey Honuskipper,
It sounds like I have the exact same Barlow 20's with the flat head bolt in the top and I can't get them undone either. What did you do to persuade them?
