Granny Bars?

So what does everyone think about Granny bars? I haven't that discussed much here. They came on a boat I had, and I actually considered removing them, but after having them for a while, I really liked them.... Here's a pic of what I'm talking about...

Re: Granny Bars?

If they don't interfere with anything you need to do I can't see the downside of having something else to grab onto.

Re: Granny Bars?

not a bad idea but they wouldn't do me much good. With all the main sail strings run to the cockpit don't have much need to go to the mast.

Re: Granny Bars?

My granny bars make a nice place to lash our kayaks.

Re: Granny Bars?

If you have to work at the mast for sail hoisting or feeding they are a godsend. If not great for grabbing hold of or tying things off.........keep them!!!!

Re: Granny Bars?

We love ours as well. We also have deck boxes mounted on the bottom of them that are a great place to store winch handles, sail ties, etc and belay pins towards the top which help keep our halyards from slapping on the mast when we are docked.

Ya... good point I prefer my halyards, reefing etc at the mast so they are great for that in rough weather.

Cheechako

Being of that age where I could be considered a granny - I would much prefer you call them by their correct name as in Fife Rails. Just saying !

And yes we did install them when we purchased our boat 18 years ago.
Cheers Sue.

I reckon that we would do better to call them "mast pulpit bars" or a "mast pulpit" to avoid the sexist inference that only females need additional security at the mast.

Same advice for the people who call a "mast pulpit" a "sissy bar".

Late edit: Ouch! Beaten by Sapient Sue!

Re: Granny Bars?

We always called ours "bun huggers". Should I be insulted at myself?

Re: Granny Bars?

You just have to be sure that they're tall enough to provide the support that you need. I've seen some that were so low that--like lifelines that are too low--they are more of a hazard than a help.

Re: Granny Bars?

PC police .

The bars on my Harley are "ape-hangers". I've never felt insulted. On the back is a "sissy" bar. To my knowledge, no one has mistaken me for an ape-hangin' sissy, except for perhaps my wife .

Bun-huggers! I like it.

You either are a Granny or you are not. Sorry, but they are only fife rails if they have belaying pins for belaying the halyards. But fife rails works for me!
