Grab Rail Options

I am considering replacement of my teak handrails/Grab rails with something less demanding of my upkeep time. There are a number of stainless and bronze grabrail options which appear to be primarily marketed to the home bathroom market. Any reason I should not use one of the many bronze grab rail options that come up in a google search?

Try searching for handrails or rails. Grab bars, at least for us lubbers, seems to generally refer to bathroom fixtures.

I actually got a kick out of that when I first saw it. I was reviewing some architectural plans right out of school and, looking at the bathroom, I saw 'grab rails' called out in the plans/specifications. Now, I have an immature mind and a tendency towards visualization, so you can imagine...

I laughed for a good few minutes, my boss thought (still thinks) I was an idiot.

A Pacific Seacraft 25 in my marina has stainless grab rails of a bathroom-design. They don't look out of place. The price is right, too!

My old timer neighbour suggests the following mixture.
One third wood preservative
One third thinners
One third yacht varnish

I'd already learnt that a really thin first coat lasts a couple of years rather than just a season. Mine are probably 30 yr old, deep grooves with mould and lichen. Took a bit of cleaning but the coarse surface makes handling really good. Anything with a slick new surface is going to slippy when wet! I suggest you reconsider.

Also to consider is the heat from the sun on metal grab rails. There are lots of options. You can get bronze fittings and run heavy mooring line through them. Doing a search for grab rail options in some of the old boat building books comes up with a lot of alternatives.
