Re: Go South Sail Inventory Query

Nowadays there are a lot of sail options for light air. Not that they're replacements for big genoas, but many are easier to fly. And some make it easier to cobble together a more versatile sail inventory.

Re: Go South Sail Inventory Query

A small storm quality jib (a very very flat cut and a relatively heavy cloth) is a big plus, much as it takes up valuable space in a small boat.

One can assume they will rather beat it with a new strong main deep reefed BUT any sail can get blown or else one may be forced to run and so a storm jib is nice, as long as there is space and budget for one. It is great if such a sail can be hoisted on its own deeply offset stay.

Why I am saying this is because without light weather sails one cannot really sail but without storm sail one can easily perish.

I'd definitely agree, & a storm jib for a 12m boat can be packed for stowage so that it's no bigger than a 2l. beverage bottle.

Re: Go South Sail Inventory Query

The problem with the whole storm jib thing on a small, simple coastal boat with roller furling is how do you deploy it. You either need to take the jib off the furler and feed the storm jib up the luff groove. Pretty much impossible once it gets nasty, or set up some sort of removable stay, or strong halyard to set it flying. There are the galerider systems that loop around the rolled up sail, but its all more complexity and clutter most of the time. If you are only doing 150 mile hops then you pick your weather, and in the worst case scenario you motor sail with the deep reefed main to get to windward. With this approach you need strong sails, because the rolled up jib becomes you storm jib. But I dont have a big issue with it for coastal stuff.

The third reef in the main comparatively adds minimal extra complexity.
