Furling System--Profurl L31

Profurl L31

I attempted to fix a Profurl L31.

Problem: It is/was extremely tough/hard to furl in the sail, and it was also difficult to unfurl the sail!

What I believe the problem to be after taking it apart: The extrusion (and some type of plug up inside the extrusion) slipped through the furling system and came to rest on the forestay turnbuckle. Once I unassembled the furling system I found that maybe the reason for the extrusion to slip OR in was originally installed incorrectly, the extrusion was to far down into the drum housing, hence rubbing on the turnbuckle.

My fix: drilled two hole closer to the end of the extrusion, therefore the extrusion didn't come down so far into the housing and the set screws (which came through the drum, through a housing and hit the extrusion) held this up in a higher position.

Once back together, furling and unfurling was a lot easier but I still feel it could be better!

Does this make sense? Can you tell me some of the causes for a tight drum? Also the bearings felt or appeared to be fine.

Hi GJ:

If you do a search there was apost on adjusting the tension on the Profurl system. I'm not positive that that would help but it might.
