FWIW,

I had reefing genoas on a couple of previous boats (note, genoas, not stays'ls), and found them to be a big PITA to use... never found a satisfactory means of dealing with the bunt. Another factor was that the heavy clew ring and patch exacerbated any tendency for the leach to flutter.

All in all, I abandoned this approach despite its apparent attractions.

that's a good point. My little stays'l was pretty stiff etc with it also. All in all, i just like using the stays'l and being real conservative about weather! But I didnt sail around the world! Maybe a Furling stays'l is the ticket!
