External Mast Roller Furling

I have seen sailboats with roller furling mounted behind the main mast without any fairing such as the Italian Bamar units--does anyone have any experience as to their effectiveness??--I was wondering because there seems to be quite a gap between mast and furling sail. As ages proceeds I look for ways to ease sail handling. I could make one of these myself. Thanks for any input. MarkH
