Dutchman Boom Brake - Line Diameter

I purchased a Dutchman boom brake (model BB500) last year but have a problem using the recommended line.

The owners manual specifies a diameter of 11mm (7/16"). However, I've found that a line of that size jams on itself inside the brake. There just doesn't seem to be enough clearance between the top pulleys for the line entering from one side and exiting the other.

The net effect is that I can tension the boom on one side (i.e. the side from which the line is led back to the cockpit) but not on the other.

Has anyone else encountered this problem or am I doing something wrong?

I believe it should be dead ended on one end and only operated from the other.
That's what I did on my previous boat.

I have the 500 as well and am using 3/8 line (Samson XLS) and it has been working very well up to 20 knots (which is the highest it has been up to).
