Double Braid Polyester Line On The Cheap

I need to get a few hundred feet of 1/2 double braided polyester line to replace my old Spinnaker and Genoa halyards for my 38 foot Morgan sailboat.

I have been looking around online and I am seeing sites selling these lines from anywhere between $1.50 to $3.00 a foot, until I stumbled across this site:

e-rigging dot com

Looking into their double braid polyester line, they are selling 600 feet for $323! That is quite a bit of savings on twice as much line.

Here is the kicker, are all double braided polyester lines created equal... and should I trust this site?

I would love anyone opinion on this business or maybe I just came across a nice bulk deal?

All line is NOT created equal: there are vast differences in quality between recognizable brand names and others. I will only buy line from New England, Samson, Robline, Yale, or Marlow. The stuff you get at the hardware store or cut-rate websites is often, in my experience, really poor quality. It does not pay to buy cheap line. I can't stress that enough.

I have no specific knowledge of that retailer, but a bulk buy of rope (lines) is almost always far cheaper than by the foot. When I was fishing we always used to buy rope by the coil (600 or 1200 ft) and chain by the drum.

Edit: make sure you know the manufacturer, so you not getting junk.

Re: double braid polyester line on the cheap

thank you guys, that was pretty much what I was thinking.

With that being said, does anyone have a company that sells the good name brands for non gouging prices?

I found Samson XLS double braid polyester 1/2" selling for $1.50 a foot at defender dot com.

Re: double braid polyester line on the cheap

Why 1/2" ? 7/16" will work just as well and save you some money. 1/2" is not really necessary.

Two different ropes would also be a good idea. For the spinnaker halyard Samson LS or NER Sta Set will work fine. A little stretch will not cause any difficulty for the spinnaker but your jib halyard should be low stretch. For the jib halyard Sta Set X would do the best job unless you want to pay extra for one of the low grade Dyneema ropes such as VPC. 7/16" Sta Set X is currently $1.86 at Jamestown. You might prefer VPC which at $1.79 with Defender is slightly less expensive. Ask them for a quote on Sta Set X which isn't in their catalog.

If you can wait a little while Defender will be having its annual sale in late March and all ropes will be cheaper.

^^^ 2nd this!

WestMarine is having it's 40% off sale very soon, problem with that is most everything I priced at 40% off was still more expensive than Defender daily price. Wait until March!

Ditto! The cheap stuff is good only for learning how to splice braided line.

I can wait until March for the sale, thanks for that guys.

The reason why I want 1/2 inch is because the tech sheets from the manufacture stated this size.

Try cajun ropes at Cajunrope.com - Home.
1/2" polyester double braid $.95 a foot in white or 1.11 in color.

Good quality rope at great prices and very personal service.
I just replaced most of my running rigging through them

cajunrope looks interesting, much more affordable and I can get 120' with an eye splice and SS shackle for less than $200!

Re: Double Braid Polyester Line On The Cheap

Once again I will say go look at Defender.. Most of the apples to apples comparison of line is cheaper at Defender than @ West with thier 40% off. Not all, but most.
