Coverting Old Mast into a Boom

Hello, I have purchased a Bayfield 32c recently and the boom has grown some legs and feet and have walked away. I have been looking for a replacement boom for some time now and I feel that I'm running out of options besides having a new one built. I know of a mast that is free and thought about cutting it down and turning it into a boom. Any thoughts?? Would it be strong enough? I am looking for the boom the be about 13.5 feet long.
Thanks
Ed

no reason you cant do that as long as the section is a similar size. my friends boom on his BCC is an old hobie mast...

where are you located?, i have a boom you can have for next to nothing, think it is around 12 feet will have to measure

I'm located in Michigan. The only thing I'm worried about would be the gooseneck.

Dwyer Mast have a couple of good webpages, detailing various extrusions (shape, weight, thickness, etc.) used for booms, and a measuring guide. Useful when comparing “non-standard” but “available” extrusions, you may wish to adapt.

I am a big believer in reusing wood and try to do this if possible. The environmental and spiritual benefits aside, its also a quality issue as well. The availability of high quality old growth timber is becoming more limited and costly.

I don't know what your wood working skills are but if the right tools are available depending on what style of boom you decide to fabricate it should be a fairly simple and a rewarding project. You might try to see if the origional construction plans are available for the boom.

Good luck
