Cost of Dyneema vs Dyform rigging

I am going to have to re-rig my 51 foot cutter in the near future and intend to do the work myself. It is currently rigged with Dyform. Still in the early planning stages, I'm looking into synthetic options and have found the concerns with the unknown lifespan of the Dyneema and unknowns in case of lightning strike, but I can't find much information about the cost.

If Synthetic only lasts 8 years, but costs significantly less than the Dyform, it could be a valid option. Insurance companies don't like rigging to be any older than 10 years anyway regardless of what it is made of.

Of course, lightning would still be a concern...

So, can any one venture an estimate at the cost of Dyneema + fittings vs Dyform + fittings?

Re: Cost of Dyneema vs Dyform rigging

The last boat I had we had it quoted, and Dux rigging cam in about 10% more than regular stainless, with about 1/2 of the cost in the fittings. Since the fittings are aluminium instead of stainless they are reusable forever unlike stainless that should be replaced from time to time.

I would suggest calling John at Colligio and asking for a quote. A big boat like this getting it right isn't as simple as on my 24' tri.

Agree with Stumble -- get in touch with Colligio for a quote as you might be pleasantly surprised with using DynaDux rigging.

Re: Cost of Dyneema vs Dyform rigging

There are valid concerns with synthetic rigging but I don't think lightning is one of them. The heat from a lightning strike should theoretically vaporize steel as easily as plastic, but neither seems to happen in practice.
