Cord Wrapped Steering Wheel

I was on a friends boat for about a month and really came to enjoy his rope wrapped steering wheel. Looked fairly simple to do, but I cannot find any directions. My main concern is the size and type of rope to use. size I can guess but nylon, Dacron? It was on his boat by PO. any suggestions? Many thanks Al

I would use non-tarred seine twine.

I’ve used 1/8" OR 3/16" Braided Polyester or Dacron Cord (Outboard Starter Cord, Flag Halyard) for Coxcombing.

... and I'm happy with it. I liked the feel of it. I don't like the feel of nylon or polyester so well; to hard and strength matters little. The clothes line was very easy to work with and it grips the SS better than nylon. I'm sure it will go another 3 years.

OK, no cotton, from what I see here. It's crap line, but good for this use.

* Tape the end down
* Wrap tight using rubber palm gloves for grip
* Wrap over the start
* Mark the king spoke in some way, either turks head or simply wrap the spoke

Some use coach whipping--looks great--but I like the feel of a plain wrap better.

took a few nights and it is short of a professional job but it was pretty easy and looks great and has a great feel. Thanks for the tips.

The Riggers Apprentice by Brion Toss has some great instructions and drawings on various methods of coxcombing, including an awesome three legged Turks head for marking the kingspoke properly. This is a great way to mark the kingspoke because the knot comes over the wheel and not just the spoke, so you can feel it without looking.
