Converting Hank-on Sails to Furling Sails
I'm told that you need to have a foam pad sewn into the luff to have the sail furl nicely.
True? Sailmaker wants $450 for this mod.
Whats this look like for soo much money?
If needed can I do it myself?
Uv materiel added to the leach to protect it from the sun, when asked he said it's a peal and stick. I know I need this.
Wants $275
How can I do this myself?

You do need the sunshade on the leech. The foam, I'm skeptical. Others may report...

What size is the sail? (In other words, is it a 150%, a 125%, et cetera.)

I would not be inclined to add a foam luff to a 110% lapper.
Edit: I should add that I had a rope luff pad added to a 110% on my previous boat, and was not impressed enough to do that again.

A foam luff tape helps to maintain sail shape when you reef. It's more important with larger sails that are more full cut. I'm sure you could do the whole job yourself with an industrial-type sewing machine, basic skills, and materials (available from Sunbrella Fabrics, Sailcloth, Canvas and Sail Hardware, Gill Foul Weather Gear and More!, e.g., foam luff tape: $2.75/foot).

great input the Insignia Cloth is $19.75 a yd in 54" width.
Should get 3 widths (18") out of 54", so that's about $2.20 a linear foot of UV cover I need about 60' or < 7 yards.
That saves a few bucks.

Jimbo,
Just be careful the cloth is wide enough so you get sufficient overlap as the sail is rolled up.

I thought about that, thinking of going up in a chair and measuring the exposed part adding a couple of inches.

Sailrite recommends adding 6" to compensate for "sloppy" furling. I also notice they don't fully trust the adhesive and sew the edges.

6" sounds like a lot of excess, anyone here have an opinion on how much extra to add?

I am yet to see a good 'converted' one. The design is different from the beginning. It is not just the luff padding and the UV strip.

I would trust sailrite, they have always been honest with me. As you probably have guessed by now, you can DIY, but the cost of the sewing machine and other incidentals is much more that it would cost you to have a sailmaker do it.
BTW- the luff padding is to make a better airfoil with a partially rolled sail, not to make it roll easier.

We bought a nearly new hank on sail from flee bay and had a local sail maker convert it for us. The sail is approx 70% the size of our Genoa so will do nicely as a No 2. Sailmaker did extend the leech all the way up to were the genoa would normally be so the furling widget you attach the sail to is in the same place. If you don't then the halyard can rap around the furling gear rather than the widget turning. Cost us $110 I think, but this didn't include the UV strip.
We also have a hank on No 2 incase the furling breaks or we want to fly twin head sails.
