companionway hatch

OK. I lost my companionway hatch to the depths last weekend. How hard is it to make your own? anyone have any inexperience with this? What are the best methods, supplies, tools? Id really appreciate any help i can get on this.

Aloha Russell,

There are lots of ways to make one. There are lots of books too. You might go to your library and check on This Old Boat and From a Bare Hull or Complete Amateur Boatbuilding. It depends on whether you want a teak hatch, fiberglass hatch, plywood hatch. Too many variables to help you much on this one.

I have a little inexperience building Hatch Boards, which required the use of a table saw, jointer/planer (& a friend skilled in it’s use), biscuit cutter (jointer), and numerous large clamps.
My supposition is that it may be difficult to achieve good results on any project for which one doesn’t even know what tools are required.
