chainplate fabricator in miami area?
hi cruiser community-
any recommendations/suggestions on a chainplate fabricator/machine shop in Miami area?
looking at replacing the chainplates on my 30 year old catamaran. bought the boat in may 2016 and previous owner had no knowledge when chainplates were replaced (and he owned it 12 years).
the chainplates are flat external SS. have read some of the threads here on other materials such as the super duplex 32750 or 32760 SS or titanium, but will probably go with 316 SS to keep it simple on a boat of this age.
any suggestions are appreciated!

Re: chainplate fabricator in miami area?
If they are just flat, bar stock SS then any machine shop can do that. Buy some proper sized 316 bar, take the old ones for a pattern and have the shop cut and drill holes.
You can then polish up yourself or find someone that will do electropolishing.
One of the oldest, best fabricators in S Florida is Pipewelders. Assume they could do all of the above if the project isn't too small for them.

Re: chainplate fabricator in miami area?
Any shop that has a few tools could do them. All you basically need is a way to cut metal, grind it, drill holes, & optionally, polish it. Which means that with a bit of time, it's not tough to DIY them. Or, you could hire out the job elsewhere, meaning having a shop outside of your area make them working from either mechanical drawings (with the key dimensions noted), or by using the old ones as patterns.
That said, you really are doing yourself a disservice by not having them made from Titanium, or 2nd choice, Duplex Stainless. Since both of those materials are much less prone to work hardening, corrosion, cracking etc. And they're not appreciably more expensive to have made if you're farming out the fabrication. Why use 50-100yr old tech/materials?
Edit: When it comes time to sell the boat, having titanium chainplates will surely help things.

If you really need a fabricator (as opposed to some of the other good suggestions already posted), try Chris Tomaszewski at YRM in Fort Lauderdale (yrmcustom.com). They've done some smaller jobs for me, quite reasonable.
Regards,
David.

Re: chainplate fabricator in miami area?
I would NOT go through a rigger or a marine services company; 95% of them will just outsource it to a machine shop and mark it up. Just find the best small to medium sized machine shop in Miami and take all the old plates in with you. You're there, with the plates, and discuss it with them, and they'll not turn you away and if you're a nice guy they will probably cut you a break on price if you're flexible on time. If you propose bringing them in a couple at a time, so you don't need to bring the stick down, chances are they'll either turn you away or charge you more, so there is that to add to your calculus.

For any rigging job in the Miami area my first call is to Sailing Services. They are a very good full service shop with excellent capabilities. Either Brooks or Pedro should point you in the right direction.

Re: chainplate fabricator in miami area?
If their is any special dimensions or holes needing to be drilled, I recommend that you get a quote from Advanced Waterjet Solutions in Fort Lauderdale, 954-533-2464. They made my bell shaped 316 SS chainplates by using a water jet. They provided all the materials. Using a water jet will reduce heat in the SS which would have degraded the metal.

Re: chainplate fabricator in miami area?
My first thought was to ask Brook Jones at Sailing Services.
Then I remembered C&R Metal Fabricators on North River Drive.

I second the water jet recommendation.* Advanced Waterjet Solutions and YRM (that I recommended above) are next door to each other.* YRM cut a custom aluminum tank access plate for me, and welded appropriate NPT bushings into it, all in two days.* Best to be flexible on time, as someone else suggested, as they can then use your job to fill in around other jobs and give you a break on price.

Re: chainplate fabricator in miami area?
No need to drive to Ft. Lauderdale for waterjet cutting. C&R in Miami does it.

Maybe I missed the part where you explained the reason for replacement. 'It's old is an absurd reason. Hover you observed any cracking?

even if cracks are not observed, it's still good preventative maintenance. I replaced my 35+yr old chainplates, not seeing any cracks, but when I pulled the last one off the boat, it bent. Other owners of similar boats to mine have seen cracks on theirs so I replaced mine for good measure... turned out it was needed anyway.

Re: chainplate fabricator in miami area?
thanks everyone for these excellent suggestions...what an awesome community you all are!
i have not removed the chainplates to inspect them but for all i know they could be the 30 year old originals and i'm planning to leave for south America in april for a couple of years and wanted to have the comfort of knowing they were new and not have to look for replacements somewhere in central/south america.
i already checked in with sailing services and the machine shop they use they said would be too expensive for something this simple, and they suggested checking with CF. i'll definitely research the water-jet cutting and the alternative materials (titanium and duplex stainless) with a couple of these shops. thanks again!
