Butyl On Sails
I have managed to get some black butyl on my nylon headsails and try as I might have not been able to get off, wondering if their are any ideas on what may work.

Re: Butyl On Sails
Sorry I don't have a direct answer but here are some questions that might point you or others in finding a answer.
Are you trying to remove the butyl itself or the stain that remained after removing the bulk of the butyl?
Are the headsails really nylon or some other synthetic e.g. polyester (dacron) etc? This is important to know as various synthetics react differently to different solvents. Not many headsails (if any) are nylon.
What Butyl did you use as there are several types of butyl with different chemistries?
What have you already tried? Again important as the methods already used might have changed the chemistry of the butyl stain.
Lastly I suspect any stain is not actually butyl, rather it is a dye used in the butyl that has reacted to with the synthetic used for the headsail.

Mineral spirits. It's what you use to clean up butyl. No guarantee it will get the black out but it's worth a try.
Follow it up with mild soap and water to rinse the solvent out.

Re: Butyl On Sails
I've found Naptha works well on butyl. No idea what it would do to your sail.

Re: Butyl On Sails
I bet the stain will last at least twenty years as many have claimed to be the standard on bedding hardware with butyl tape. I would be very careful about what thinners/solvents I would use on a synthetic sail. If it were my boat, I would "live with it" as an example of the detriments of using certain products aboard my boat. Good luck and safe sailing.

Yeah just sew a decorative patch over it or make a see thru panel if it happens to be in a good spot for either of these ideas.

Live with the stain. Using solvents is pretty bad for Dacron.

Re: Butyl On Sails
Dacron is polyester.
Here is a chemical compatibility chart for polyester.
Chemical Compatibility
As you can see, it has good solvent resistance for many common solvents (and not so good for others!), including acetone and hexane.

What about the resins and other ingredients used in manufacturing sailcloth? And what form polyester is that chart for? Many sail slides are manufactured out of polyester. I wouldn't worry that much about polyester in that form but polyester fibers are a different matter. But WTF do I know anyway. I've only been in and around the sailmaking industry since the 1990's.
