Building my mast

Hi All
I'm building myself a new 9 metre high mast (last one snapped at the spreaders) - ouch!!!
I am re-using as many old fittings as possible.
The old one had the stays attached to bolts inside the mast and went through holes about 6cm x 2cm long.
So near the spreaders are 3 x 6cm holes and 2 more holes for the bolts to go through.
I'm figuring tangs bolted just below spreaders would be better??
Would this be correct??Click image for larger version

Re: Building my mast

Yeah, definitely too many holes at the weakest point of the mast. If you goto rig-rite, they have prefab'd tangs. Just order the ones that fits the thru bolt.

Re: Building my mast

Why did the old mast break in the first place? Are you aware of any other boats with the same rig and same problem?

I notice from the first photo that it looks like it did not break at the long holes that the shrouds pass through, but rather above at the spreader base bracket. Changing to tangs will not fix something that did not break, correct?

If you do install tangs they should probably be through bolted with proper compression sleeves.

Re: Building my mast

I'm figuring old age (or to much back stay and inner forestry).

The Inner forestry went through as well, and it basically opened up like a tin can.
But it was one of the side stays that starred in the movie, it went out with a "BANG".
