Re: Bronze Turnbuckles

10 years of being on sailing forums, I have yet to hear of a bronze turn-buckle failure. The ones I have heard of were of SS and of the smaller sizes (under 5/16" - 8 mm), due to crevice corrosion.

But being from India would worry me. Who knows who hammered them out. I would be requesting some test certificates to buy those.

The only fully bronze turnbuckles that I know of are the old Merriman turnbuckles that pretty much disappeared from the market in the 1990's. Nowadays, bronze turnbuckles are bronze bodies and stainless steel screws and toggles. There are all stainless steel turnbuckles that are made of 316L steel and are immune to crevice corrosion, but they are very expensive. I don't know the quality of bronze turnbuckles from Bristol Bronze, but Hayn makes very high quality, as does Garhauer and Sta-Lok--all are bronze bodies and stainless screws.
