Birds messing my deck !!!

The birds along Long Island Sound are making an awful mess on the foredeck of our boat when at our slip. What works to deter them?

Or a cat. You might want to try one of those fake owls.

Re: Birds messing my deck !!!

You could try a five gallon bucket hanging from a halyard and another line secured to the deck to limit the swing. It will swing a little in the breeze or waves. If it has what looks like an eye on it that is a plus:

We used to have a terrible time with terns when we kept our boat south of Boston. We found that running a cheap string of nylon signal flags from the bow pulpit, over the boom and tied off to the backstay kept them away. The noise and movement was irritating enough to send them in search of a better perch. Remember, you don't have to outrun the bear, just outrun your neighbor.

Bird deterrent spider. This thing moves all over the place in a very slight breeze and has a 30 day money back guarantee, a guy at the dive shop with a huge trawler has them and no way a bird would land on his boat.

Re: Birds messing my deck !!!

with bubba on board i have no problem. he catches them and makes them dead. he is an official seagull killing gato. he started with smaller birdees and grew into his addiction.....
also--fishing line prevents the birds from landing on your boat to make their messes..
living aboard also helps--daily life on the boat keeps birds off......

1) Long Zip ties on your spreaders pointing up every few inches apart.
2) Streamers above any canvas that the birds can land one

Hang several old CD's from your boom. You can hang them with string either singly or 2 or 3 high. The slightest breeze makes them rotate. Apparently, the changing reflection of the sun on the CD disturbs them.
Then again, these are Texas birds - no explainin'.

Re: Birds messing my deck !!!

hanging cds or dvds is a very painful eye experience for neighbors--if yu wish to keep friends, i suggest a different method of ridding boat from birdeez. the strobe effect from the shiny swinging cds can cause strokes and migraines. is a very very painful experience to be next to one of these. there was a neighbor in the la cruz anchorage who was never on board--had his life lines rigged with cs--what a pain--i could not even go out to enjoy the view in the anchorage in daylight--so keep yur neighbors in mind when you do things to relieve yourselves if a tiny pest. washing bird poo is easier than making a stroke victim back to whole. an dprecedence has been made to be able to sue the cause of the disabilitating illness---be wise , be careful and dont stroke out your neighbors by use of something that causes a strobe effect from sunshine.
keep the cds in teejasss.

So CD's cause strokes? And they can sue? Guess that explains why I haven't seen my slip neighbor in a few months.

toss some food on the deck of someone elses boat 10 slips away from you and train the birds to go to that boat instead of yours

cd's reflect light brightly and tha tlight makes a strobe effect, which causes migraines, strokes an d other neurological problems. try looking at a deck full of cds as they spin and reflect bright light into your eyes and the eyes of others. many folks don't tolerate strobe effect, which is what is produced by the spinning cds.

Re: Birds messing my deck !!!

An Osprey tore off my wind indicator three times, apparently to provide a convenient place to land while he crapped all over my boat and sailcover. I used about 24" from the end of an old fishing rod, attached it to an old sheet with zipties, hung a CD off the tip and pulled to the top of my mast with the main halyard. It drove him to other boats and problem solved. I can only hope Zee is right and that CD would give that damn bird a heart attack.
