Barlow Winch Repair

I know Barlow went out of business some time ago but I need to repair one on my boat. I'm rebuilding a Morgan 22 and it has 2 Barlow 16's on it for the jib sheets. On one of them the pawl cavity on the winch spindle has been damaged just enough that the pawl can and does come out when the winch is spun. As I see it I have a couple of options.

1 - one of you out there knows where I can find a good replacement for sale. That would be my preferred option.

2 - I find someone to braze on the edge that chipped ot bent off. I don't even really know if this is possible.

3 - I take that one pawl out and sail with out it. I know this isn't a great idea but it's a day sailer and I don't plan on taking it out with wind much for than 15-20 kts. On a small boat how much stress would this put on the other pawl?

HUTTON-ARCO Yacht Winches Arco took over the Barlow and Barient winch parts business. Understand they stoc most of the parts needed though may not be at the cheapest prices

hmmm.... Do the pawls have good sharp edges? Also old Grease can compact in the drum corners where the pawl must set. is it clean? Many people over grease winches to the point of causing issues not fixing them. Clean the winch and assemble wth no lube and give it a try. You might be suprised

Barlow winches frequently show up on ebay. No #16s at this time, but there is a pair of #20s.

I just received new, good quality roller bearings for our Barlow 23s ordered from the australian ARCO-HUTTON. They were not cheap I but cannot find them anywhere else. THey do stock a large inventory of spare parts Barlows and are good returning emails (unless they are on a 4 week Christmas vacation)...

Also check consignment stores such as Bacon Associates in Annapolis. Small Barlow winches are pretty common.

I am also looking for a barlow 16 winch or parts for repair purposes. I've unfortunately lost the top cap and two screws. Please let me know if you have one or the parts.

I have two #15 Barlow standard winches chrome in good working order if you are interested...

I believe Barlow and Barient pawls are interchangeable. Pawl springs are basically the same for all winches, they just need to be bent a little this way or that to make them work.

In my case Both are barlow 16 but the bold on top is different.

The pc is of the old one, the new one is a regular bold with a small cilinder
