A marine store wanabee guru told me almost any kit would do ??? I don't thinl so. Please help me source these. Thanks. Blueyes in Darien GA USA

Re: Barlow Winch Kits

No, not "any kit" will do. I have Barlow 20s and 26s for sheets, and a few others on deck and mast. While you can and should contact Arco for the real deal (what's a "kit", anyway?), I have found that Lewmar pawl springs will work on the Barlows if you bring in a clean pawl and more or less eyeball the fit.

But it's best to deal with Arco. Barlows were very well built and are well worth reconditioning. I break mine down every couple of years and clean them with old toothbrushes, a bit of acetone and a bit of Scotchbrite. I lube with a seemingly eternal tube of Barlow winch grease, but a light go-over with lithium grease will serve, as would some of the standard bicycle greases like Phil's or chain grease.
