Anyone familiar with Merriman Holbrook winches?

I've got a pair off my 44 footer that I pulled of 2 speed stainless ones that I and replaced with a pair of Lewmar 50 self tailing winches, to make the boat a little bit more friendly.

They are massive, with an 8 inch base... But other than saying Merriman Holbrook on the trim ring, I've found no other markings that indicate a size or power rating.

I'm wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of what model they might be before I try to sell them.

Thanks,

Zach

OK, I'll go first.

They look like 40s but I have no proof

The size was always marked on top opposite the name. Sure they're just not worn after 30+ years? Try using a black marker and wiping gently with a rag. You may find a ghost impression appears.

I believe that Merriman stopped making winches in the late 70s, and I think Barient bought them out. I bought 6 of them and they were all numbered the same as Barients. Take measurements and compare them to Barients and you will (I believe) have Merriman numbers. If I remember correctly, the springs and pawls were inter-changeable with Barient. Great winches!!! ______Grant.

Re: Anyone familiar with Merriman Holbrook winches?

These guys stock Merriman parts. Maybe give them a call.

Merriman Winches

While I'm here, the code number might not be exactly 40 but maybe 45 or something. The old chrome/bronze Lewmar 43 was that size. My previous boat had them.

Index a reference mark on top and crank and determine the ratio. This will help you determine the model from a parts source.
