wishbone booms can be a good thing having sailed a wharram cat with one they are also a lot safer than a boom as they wont smack you in the head while gybing.

It really depends. As a large percentage of them are hollow, & made of carbon fiber. Especially on one off boats, such as that one by Tom Wylie. But even the wooden ones tend to be fairly light, & the masts are often carbon fiber & hollow as well. So it balances out, no pun intended.
