Adams 45 - Running Rigging - Masthead Queries

Greetings All,

After much searching on the internet for information I thought it best to consult the CF collective oracle!

I am a neophyte having just bought an Adams 45 as my first sailing vessel...and am now on a steep learning curve!

I seek confirmation of the masthead rigging arrangement as per photos attached. The aft view is sorta clear - being main halyard and topping lift however the front view is unclear to me...as well as midway down.

She is a masthead cutter - main, yankee and staysail being the wardrobe as it stands.

...can those with far more knowledge confirm these please?

Hi Monty Congrats on the Adams fast boats

1) from your shots looks like the eye just above the haliard (No 1 ) would be for your inner forestay and the haliard is for your staysail to be raised. If you have the staysail on a boom ( going by your shot of the boat it looks that age of booms on staysails ) you will have a staysail topping lift around there as well.

2) cant really identify much else but you will have forestay tang and haliard maybe a spinika haliard which is usually on a block attached to your mast head crane and could very well run outside the mast.

#'s 1&3 are spin halyards. 2&4 appear to be jib halyard and a spare. Do yourself a favor and dump the wire halyard into the rubbish bin. Replace it with a low stretch rope halyard. Twin spin and a spare for the jib, very nice for a cruising boat, but seldom seen. Is she alloy or steel? A&B seem to be a different view of 2&4. Is that correct?

Hey Monty, Valkyrie is correct, i've rigged three of these twenty years ago... Joe intended for most of his boats to be sailed wing a wing.... Cheers

I concur with 1 & 3 = spin halyards
2 & 4 = headsail halyards
Tang between 1 & 3 = forestay attachment

If you do replace the wire halyards with rope (a good idea in my opinion, although some people swear by wire), make sure that you also change the sheaves. Sheaves for wire have a different profile from rope, and will stress the rope, plus old sheaves that have been used for wire will invariably be roughened-up by the wire and will chafe through the covers of your nice new rope halyards frustratingly quickly. The sheaves in the photos look pretty rooted anyway.

Do yourself a favor, though, and buy a reel of VB cord and mouse all your halyards as you take em out...

She is steel and A & B are aft of the mast...topping lift and main halyard...not another view of 1 & 2.
