watermaker

I think the best water maker on the market is the towable one.
NO electric,NO probs, Cheaper and can be taken into a liferaft

That must be a pretty fast life raft. Where'd you get it? <grin>
Save your money on the towable WM and save a bit more and get one you'll be happy with.

As a watermaker dealer and someone who has repaired, tested, installed many various brands of WM and built two of my own for my own boat. I have a pretty good feel for all watermakers available their prices and their qualities or lack of. So I'll stand by my previous statement. If you want a cheaper WM that will suit your needs, build your own. Brent Swain a member here on this board will supply you with great plans. But note well, that not all WM are created equal. Everyones needs are different and getting the right WM for you takes a bit of questioning. You'll certainly get lots of advice here and elsewhere about what WM you should have. My experiance is that there are too many variables to say what WM works for one boater will always work for the next or the rest. Good luck in your search, take your time and feel free to ask all you want.

Sorry Pete, I guess I have to work on my writing skills. I was not annoyed at all in fact I enjoy talking WM. It's kind of a strange hobby of mine. I might have to get out more often. Please feel free to PM me with any questions you have about WM. I promise to be kind.

WM

Dont worry no offence taken Sally says that I talk to people sometimes like I was still in the Marine (old habits die hard) I was realy intereste in the idea of a watermaker that needed no power. When I went on my circum nav I used a hand watermaker that took all day to give you a cup full but it served its purpose as in a very small yacht its damed hard to carry enough. I used to block the cockpit drains in a downpore and fill everything I had and the take a bath and wash the cloths. I dont do long passages anymore but still like to keep in touch with developments. When I have more time I will have a look at the plans to make one.
Thanks again Pete

buying a watermaker that works in a liferaft is like buying a sherman tank to drive in traffic. how many traffic wrecks are you going to be in and how many times will you use a watermaker in a liferaft? buy the watermaker for how you are going to use it 99% of the time. my .02.

The point is if you have a watermaker that you use on the yacht can be used also in the liferaft you have a better chance of survival as going without food for a couple of weeks wont kill you going for a few days without water will

interesting concept, but...

...I'd be far more interested in a wind-driven system. That way one could make water on the hook.

A military surplus hand held watermaker in your ditch bag makes more sense than a dual purpose water maker. In a life raft deploying action, time is precious. I wouldn't want hunting down and gathering a watermaker to be another thing I'd have to think about in what would most likely be a hectic time. I agree with gbanker, "buy the watermaker for how you are going to use it 99% of the time. my .02." As far as wind driven, it's not practical considering the pressures needed to start the RO process. I guess a 12V watermaker connected to a wind generator and a good 12V battery could be considered a wind driven one but those exist now.

Seems like a pretty good idea - wonder why they don't add a scoop up front to improve throughput. Perhaps something removable to reduce drag in lighter wind conditions.
