Water tank fill solution

On my boat I have shore water throughout the boat. However if I want to fill the tank I have to connect a hose to an onshore water outlet and run it all the way to the foredeck to SLOWLY fill the tank.
But that same shore water arrives under the galley. And the tank outlet arrives also under the galley. There is only a couple of inches seperating the pipes.
So I installed a solution to fill the tank from inside my boat, using the tank outlet to fill.
The risk of this solution is that you can pressure the poly tank with the shore water if the vent line is totally or partially plugged.
Before filling this way I always open the filler cap on the tank as a security.
Atached are 2 pictures of my installation, using the same connectors for the Pex tubing as the yard installed.
First picture shows connection to shore water inlet arriving under galley.
Both photos are turned 90º left, iPhone or CF problem?

Very unwise modification.

A hose breaks or fitting gives way and the boat sinks.

True of any direct shore water connection and there are millions of boats with them. Solution? Always shut the water off when leaving the boat. That simple.

Secondary measure, ensure bilge pump actual capacity exceeds water inflow rate.

Some direct shore water connections (and I recommend it) have a pressure reducing valve to 40psi max.

Re: Water tank fill solution

A friend of mine uses a mechanical garden hose timer at the shoreside hose bib. Once the water has flowed for a set time, the timer shuts it down.

Millions? I'd love to know where you got that number from. This is a dumb move. You already have a pressure water system on your boat. Just fill your tanks & used it. There's no good reason to do something this risky.

Re: Water tank fill solution

From our RV world of many-many years: Get one of those standard hose connection bib's with the long clear plastic hose on the end, typically 1/2 inch and say a foot or so long. Get or make it longer if you water tank is further inside the hull. Very easily to build from scratch BTW. With this guy, you can fill-up really-really fast, with no back-pressure damage issues, as air readily leaks back up around the inserted hose.....so no water tank over-pressure issues! When it sprays back out all over you, you are done filling-up....

Re: Water tank fill solution

I fill mine very slowly, through a carbon block filter to remove chlorine, dirt / rust and remove smells and taste.
For a filter to be effective the flow rate has to be low.

Not overly crazy for bus bar set up either.

Re: Water tank fill solution

This looks dangerous to me. If it were my boat my priority would be to fix the reason the deck fill doesnt work.

Re: Water tank fill solution

My neighbour on his L450 has the shore water permanently connected but diverted to the tank fill circuit rather than the pressure circuit. He has installed an electrical valve to open and close the refill selection to either tank. Fail safe to close position. Not my cup of tea but he likes it.
