Water Pump That Is Affecting My Love Life

So the water pump was crazy loud and Jabsco seemed agreeable about a warranty claim given my concerns voiced in another thread.

But I disconnected the water hoses and set it up so it pumped through short hoses into and out of a bucket. Ran like a dream. Beautiful. As quiet as I could reasonably expect.

Then I reconnected the hoses from the water tanks and to my pressurized system.... it ran quietly, until water reached the pump and pressure was restored, when it again made a hell of a noise. Just to be sure, I again disconnected the system and then reprimed it. The same result.

The pump is good for a 10' priming distance. It is at least that, from the pump to the bottom of my water tank, though admittedly maybe a foot or two beyond.

I asked around. Some suggested the pump is too far from the water tank. Others that there might be a leak in the system allowing air in.

Appreciate it if anyone has a thought; it might save my marriage.

PS. Water pump is a Jabsco PAR-Max 3.5, model 32600-0092.

Maybe you need an accumulator.

Does your system have an accumulator tank?

Could be that the pressure switch is shot. So that when the system is pressurized with all faucets closed, the switch doesn't open and keeps the pump running.

When you did the bucket test did you close the outlet hose while the pump was running? That would tell you if the switch is working.

I thought an accumulator was unnecessary, since that seems to be the first thing said in the promo blurbs of many new pumps, including the one I have. I could be wrong.

I did not close the outlet hose during my test.

Check if the screws are too tight thus negating the rubber isolators.

I don't see anything in the pump manual that says this is a variable speed pump. It looks like an ordinary diaphragm pump with a simple pressure switch. It can hammer like crazy in some installations especially if the flow rate is much below the rated pump capacity. In these cases it can switch on and off rapidly. Consider an accumulator. Otherwise, try one of the automatic variable speed pumps.

Seems that I could consider an accumulator, though the pump's literature specifies that it is unnecessary. I accept that the pump might be close to the 10' limit, though it seemed to prime without too much difficulty,

Just a thought, check the intake side hoses back to the source when the pump starts making the noise. Sometimes as they get older hoses can collapse and pinch off the intake making a heck of a racket. Just a thought.

Tellie's advice is good. Even new hoses that are not suction rated can collapse when trying to lift water 10 feet.

The pump doesn't "need" an accumulator. But it will be quieter with one I think. And it will run less often.

Re: Water Pump That Is Affecting My Love Life

The Par Max 32600 series of pumps are controlled by a conventional pressure switch. Even though the instructions don't show it, they should be installed with an accumulator tank.

Without an accumulator tank the pump may be cycling on and off very quickly which would make a hammering noise. With an open flow, as in your bucket test, this wouldn't happen.

If you want a pump that doesn't need an accumulator tank look for the words "variable speed" or "by-pass". The Jabsco pumps that don't need accumulator tanks are the Sensor Max pumps. These are variable speed pumps.

The pump is hampered by being too far from the supply. And the water system should include an accumulator.

My pump makes a racket when there is a leak on the inlet side. It won't shut off under this condition. Does yours shut off?

So.. not sure what the racket is but don't they al get louder as they reach their pressure cutoff?
PS: if you buy an acumulator, get nothing less than 1 gal unit. The small ones are pretty much useless...

Thanks for the replies.

The old pump which was replaced more less ran fine without an accumulator tank, but seems like I should get one.

Difficult to find a one-gallon tank that would easily work with my system. There are a lot of half- and quarter-gallon tanks. What would the main difference be between larger or smaller tanks?
