Water Heater Electric Element Corrosion

Hi
We have our boat in the Agean an have had to replace the electric element in the hot water system 3 times in 4years...I think due to the chemicals in the fresh water available here we seem to get a LOT of calcification on the element and then corrosion causing premature failure of the element..Does anybody have a solution ..?Somebody told me adding Steradent to the water tank during winter fixes it but Steradent is not available in Greece or Turkey I think..Steradent is the stuff dentures are soaked in ..Is there an alternative..available in Greece or Turkey..
Thanks

You might try filtering the water through an activated carbon filter as you fill the tank, or in line, if you are hooked up to dock water full time. I always filter my incoming water, and have never had to replace a heater element yet!

Your heater needs an "anode rod".

Make sure your anode is fine. The elements die prematurely when owners forget to replace the anode.
