Thank you for the reply. I like your concept; however, the upright tubing is simply a tube with no spring or valve aspect. From the other responses, I believe it is a high point filler point for the system. I will finish the project tomorrow with the filling operation. I appreciate your consideration.

One of mine came from the factory with a butterfly valve and it was in a lazzarette with poor access. You must have better access if you want to fill the cooling system thru a 1/2 pipe.

That's why I put in a header tank. The cap just barely peeks out from under the lazzarrette so I can easily fill it.

Looks like it might be a heat trap -

Used to keep the hot water from backing back into the feed line (and beyond).
