Water has Putrid Smell

Hello,

Our "new to us" boat has water in its tanks that smells putrid vomit. It really smells 10 times worse than the head and the smell lingers. Do you know if any winterization antifreezes would cause this smell?

Re: Water has putrid smell

Hi Zboss, sounds EXACTLY like the problem we had. In our case it was simply water that had been sitting for a long time, probably a couple of years. See this thread here for the great recommendations I got from various CF members.

http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ay-106089.html

In short, after flushing the tank maybe 10 times, and addding various cocktails of stuff as recommended by members, our rear tanks smell fine now, though we will never be able to use them as they have failed bladder inserts in them. Does not matter, we have plenty of other capacity.

Good luck,

Matt

Yes. less than a 20% concentration of glycol in a water tank can lead to to a massive biological problem. So if tanks had anti freeze in them and it was not flushed out well it could become a mess.

You of course already know you need to clean, disinflect and flush your tanks now (and all the lines).

Dons right. Choosing the right propylene glycol is important. I just had a customer that used an off brand and the system was permeated with what smelled like rotten Onions. It took serious bleaching to rid the smell.

Actually, if 20% glycol this material has a biological oxygen demand (200,000 ppm/250 ppm) about 800 times greater than sewage. Pump it into the holding tank and then pump the holding tank to shore. So neither proper nor legal.

If it was just a few gallons of anti-freeze that was in the tank and then the tank was filled with water it is pretty diluted already.

I would (and did) just pump it overboard. It probably isn't only to be any worst for the harbor than the tank of bleached or hydrogen peroxide water you are going to use afterward to kill the bio in the tank now.

When I got my current boat the yard did the spring commission. They didn't flush the anti-freeze out of the aft tank. When I put it on service it had so much "stuff" in it that it clogged the pump strainer. When I cleaned the filter I scratched my hand, which developed a small case of blood poisoning. Then the next day I got a gum infection because I had used that water to brush my teeth. - moral of the story is treat the water in that tank as dangerous to you.

Once the tank is cleaned out and the smell is gone, fill it with a fresh supply of water topped off with a bottle of rum. L'Chaim!

Please don't don't as that will just result in a water tank with just enough alcohol in it to become a mold growing machine!

The way I explain the glycol concentration (alcohol) thing to my customers is: if you leave a glass of beer out it will grow mold, but if you leave a glass of whiskey out it will wouldn't because it has a higher alcohol concentration

Re: Water has Putrid Smell

Don't use chlorine if you have bladder tanks.

Don't leave chlorine treated water in the pumps for long either. It is hell on things like diaphragms and impellers.

Hiya Don! I really doubt it if anything will grow in the water that contains a liter of rum, 80 proof (40% ethanol). I can see visitors singing and dancing, after having a cup of spiked water

A liter of rum in a hundred gallon tank won't do much of anything
