Re: Toilet tank Vent outlet

Again, if the vent has a charcoal filter, then the through hull must include a provision to protect from external water intrusion. Once that filter gets wet it must be replaced.

Re: Toilet tank Vent outlet

A 90 at the thru-hull will really reduce the airflow into the tank...it would take a real breeze blowing directly at the side of the boat to push any air around the turn. In combination with a straight up vertical vent line there won't be any noticeable air exchange because the gasses, including the odorless C02, in the tank are heavier than air...they don't rise.
Is that the only place the tank can be?

Re: Toilet tank Vent outlet

Filters actually help to create the very problem they're sold to solve! (Why couldn't I have put something on the market that does that!) And they make it impossible to backflush the vent line to prevent blockages.

What you really want is a system that doesn't need a filter. You might be able to eliminate yours if you replace that vent thru-hull with an open one that can let the tank breathe. Also replace the 5/8" vent line with a 1" line (easy to do, thanks to a li'l gizmo called the Uniseal UNISEAL) and I'd bet real money you won't need one.

Re: Toilet tank Vent outlet

We had this fabricated up out of 1 inch stainless and so-far (5 yr) has performed great. Our system is a gravity one, and the tank vent has a short run from just under the deck.

That's quite an elegant solution. Really nice. Thanks for the reply.

Re: Toilet tank Vent outlet

That's a fine way to keep water out of fuel and water tanks, but not the way to vent a waste tank. Catalina finally realized that too a few years ago and began venting waste tanks to a thru-hull.

Which is what I originally proposed. [emoji6]
