SPECTRA Catalina feed pump

It appears that my feed pump has stopped pumping water. Does anyone know who manufactures that pump? I have yet to take the system apart. The pump has SPECTRA on the case, but I doubt they manufacture their own pumps. I'll take it out tonight or in the morning and see if there are any other markings. I'll need to have it serviced or replaced. Any info on the pump would be useful.
Thanks

Different set up on the catalinas, big honking magnetically coupled feed pump (at least on the older ones.

Yes, It still spins. Was PO's installation guessing it is from the late 1990's

So old Catalina then, big feed pump right?

These have a magnetic coupling between motor and pump head. If motor spins could be coupling or head issue, or just an obstruction.

I would next disconnect output hose and see if it pumps water. If not attach hose to service port and turn valve to service mode. Put other end of service hose in a bucket of water. If it pumps, then there is an intake obstruction.

If you slide the heat-sink off the motor, you'll see a Spectra sticker underneath. Peeling that sticker off will usually reveal that it's a ShurFlo pump, with the part number listed (they've changed over the years).

Spectra has denied that these pump-heads wear out after ~700 hours, but it's still true. You can buy a new pump-head from your dealer (Spectra won't sell them direct any more) but there's a cheaper way:

Googling the ShurFlo pump number (for us: ShurFlo 8008‑943‑839) will usually provide an exploded parts diagram, which will include part numbers for the pump-head assembly (complete) as well as the diaphragm (which is what really wears out). Google the complete pump head part number, as well as the diaphragm part number, & you'll usually find several vendors, all for much cheaper than Spectra. Order a couple of whatever you buy, as they're good spares to carry. Replacing the whole pump-head is the easiest, but replacing just the diaphragm isn't hard, & it's much cheaper. If you keep the motor dry, it should last for years. We've only needed to replace one in 17 years of use.

We talk a bit about this on our Watermaker Page. Good luck!

Re: SPECTRA Catalina feed pump

If you get a hold of your closet Spectra distributor he'd explain to you that the Catalina pump head is either a direct drive or a mag drive pump. He would also explain the newer pump style and pressures used on the newer pump and why making the proper switch is a better idea. Sometimes doing business with your local rep yields greater benefits than going it alone to save a few dollars.

Re: SPECTRA Catalina feed pump

I partially disassembled the configuration so I can get to the motor. I ran the following test: supply from service port and a 5GAL bucked with the hose primed and the bucket 3 ft above the pump... discharged from the pump right before the 20Micro filter. Motor runs with no flow....
Without completely removing the motor module I can see a sticker on the side that says "Bodine Electric Company" The rest of it I will not be able to read until I pull the control unit and motor out of the location where they are mounted.
I'll give more info once I pull the motor.

Re: SPECTRA Catalina feed pump

Head unit is not pumping to the mag coupling. Just send SPECTRA a message to see if they have replacement head units or replacement pumps. I'll post and update once I hear from them.
THANKS!

Im not sure what you mean by that. Has the magnetic coupling failed or the pump head itself?

Re: SPECTRA Catalina feed pump

Magnet spins with head unit remove and power on and it has torque, but the when the head unit is on, the head unit doesn't pump. I've disassemble the head unit from the pump to test this. No obvious obstructions on the head unit. I have not tried to disassemble the head unit as the snap ring is rusted and will likely break if I try to remove it from the front of the head unit. I sent a note to SPECTRA to see what options they can offer.
Thanks

Re: SPECTRA Catalina feed pump

Your pumps bad, it's decoupling and they will send you to your nearest distributor to order one and will suggest a 140psi as a replacement to your 110psi pump.

Re: SPECTRA Catalina feed pump

Lets us know what you find out. As I recall parts for that pump via Spectra are rather spendy...and snap rings are cheap.
