Spectra Cape Horn leaks

After over 10 years of use, I finally had to do the dreaded task of taking my Spectra out of its tiny compartment. Is has 4 leaks. 2 involve the ferrules and 2 are on the connectors on the Clark pump endcaps. I can’t see any evidence of cracks in the end caps so that could be simple.
The ss tube where the ferrules were leaking show damage - probably not reparable. While the stains cleaned up nicely with the Dremel wire brush and the 800 grit sandpaper, the loose fit of the new ferrule, and the deep groove look worrisome, especially since I can’t simply cut a few mm off the ends. (I doubt even high vacuum silicone grease would plug the leak for long.). Spectra was wise enough to recommend that I get some of their plastic tube when was back in the US getting spares.
Finally to my question: does this plastic tube last, or is it just a temporary fix? Or is there much chance of the ss tube not leaking?
A lesson to share tho: remove the Clark module, and all of the ss tubes when fixing leaks. It will give much better and easier access, and you can clean up the tiny bits of corrosion.
Thanks.

Interesting. All the other ferrules, which didn’t leak, had some type of “grease” on them. Did it get forgotten on these two that failed?

Re: Spectra Cape Horn leaks

The black flexible HP tubing will last longer than the SS tubes. The "J" tube shown is toast and should be discarded. You can't get a new ferrule over the old crimped down tube any way. No grease is needed to get a water tight seal on these fittings.

10 years is a really good run.
Should you maybe overhaul the pump while it’s out so you can get another 10?

Re: Spectra Cape Horn leaks

Thank for the info. But something new!
Feb 27, 2019
The 4 leaks have stopped. 2 from ferrules and 2 from end fittings. I had been under the mistaken idea that the high pressure plastic tube was only a temporary fix, so came up with a way to fix the stainless tube. A new ferrule fitted loosely over the cleaned up end. I then used silicone sealant/gasket to fill the void and left it overnight to set. It is actually working! - at least for now.
BUT - a new found leak showed up. It was hidden before, since it is under a leaking connection on the top of the center block. It has a manageable leak with just one feed pump running, but a severe leak with both pumps running. Suggestions for what parts to get to fix this leak when I go back to the US please?
The photos show a drop of water on top of the center block, and drops running down the back. (Installed with the mounting plate on a wall.) With both pump running, it is a stream down the back.
The bolts are all tight.

Re: Spectra Cape Horn leaks

You have bad check valve O-rings. They have become brittle and have cracked. The annular ring O-rings are made of the same material and those should be replaced as well.
