Source for 2" bilge hose?

boat came with two of those big 4000 gph Rule bilge pumps. These babies have a 2" discharge outlet. Previous owner had somehow necked that down to 1 1/8 inch hose, which he routed through one of those check valves. I tested the pump. Blew the 1 1/8" hose off.

Now I've been looking for 2" hose, and having a problem sourcing it. West Marine carries the Rule 4000 pump, but they don't list 2" discharge hose for it. Neither does Defender. Neither does BoatUS. Neither does eBay. Neither does Amazon.

So, any ideas on where to get 2" hose for a 2" bilge pump? I need about 20 ft.

You can use pretty much any 2" hose for a bilge pump discharge. It doesn't have to be "bilge pump hose".

Two concerns:
1) A check vale on a bilge pump discharge is a problem. Either it will stick open and do nothing or it will be blocked with debris and not allow the pump to empty the bilge. Get rid of the check valve.

2) 20 feet is about 16 feet too long for a bilge pump discharge. There's a lot of resistance. The bilge pump discharge outlet should be as direct as possible. You may need to move the thru hull or install an additional one.

Source for 2" bilge hose?

As long as the hose goes up, above the level of the thru hull, within a few feet of the pump, then goes down, you can have a 20 foot hose or almost as long as you want. Water likes to flow downhill.
Look at hosecraftusa.com
Lots of choices there.

Sent from an undisclosed location on the high seas or from the lounge chair by the pool, you decide.

Re: Source for 2" bilge hose?

Before you take out the check valve be sure the discharge thru-hull is high above the heeled water line and/or there is a proper anti-siphon vented loop well above the heeled waterline. Some boats have a check valve to prevent back siphoning. If the hose does not have a way to break a siphon then just removing the check valve may allow the boat to flood.

A Simple Valve Prevents Flooding | Cruising World

Another reason check valves are sometimes used is to prevent the float switch from constantly cycling. The water in the hose flows back into the bilge when the pump stops. If the water stored in the hose raises the level enough to start the pump again it will cycle like that forever. A two inch hose can hold a lot of water.

Re: Source for 2" bilge hose?

Thanks for the feedback. To clarify some points:

I don't have a 20' hose run. I have two runs about 8 ft. or so. I just need about 20 ft. of hose total to be sure. I'll cut it into two 8 ft. sections as needed. Trimmed to fit.

The check valve is of course going. For starters, it's for a 1 1/8" hose. Secondly, in the bilge pump installation instructions I've seen for two other pumps I recently installed, Rule says NOT to use check valves. I haven't seen one for a 2" hose, anyhow.

And finally, this is a catamaran. Heel is not a big issue.

Idle question - how will you penetrate the hull? Is there a source for 2" through hulls?

same problem. Not a single piece of 2" bilge hose. They sell 2" thru hulls, with hose barbs for 2" hose. But unless I'm missing something, no hose for it.

Clear Flexible PVC Tubing Heavy Duty UV Chemical Resistant Vinyl Hose Water Oil | eBay

I don't see any "cows windpipe" corrogated 2" hose, but this reinforced pvc is better stuff anyway. You may want to consider using ABS/PVC rigid DWV pipe,if u have room & just use a short pc of hose @ each end.

Re: Source for 2" bilge hose?

keep you hose as short as possible. Use hose with a smooth inner wall - no ribs.

Check with McMaster Carr. McMaster-Carr

Our local Home Depot often carries an amazing selection of hose.

Re: Source for 2" bilge hose?

Check McMaster-Carr. Small trash and water pumps use 2" hose. My Big Edson diaphragm pump uses 2" hose.
