Forgive me for asking kind of a strange question but this is something I've been wondering about...
My wife and I are looking to up grade to a bigger sail boat and move it to the ocean in the next couple of years. Being that when that happens we'll be staying on board more frequently and for longer periods I have been thinking about different maintenance scenario's and problems we may run into.
The one thing I can't figure out is would it be advisable to shave in the sink or shower drain. My personal thought is that this could lead to a clogging issue down the road but wasn't sure what the general consensus was. Shave into a cup, hanging over the rail, in the drain etc..
Obviously I couldn't care less where I shave or how often but I am positive that my wife would be against sitting on the transom shaving her legs because I don't want her to clog the drains. any and all advice is appreciated especially the type that addresses broaching this subject with a spouse.

How long do you let your beard grow before shaving?

Assuming we are talking about more than a couple times per week, it shouldn't be an issue. If I let it go 2-3 days, it's maybe 1/8th inch and that's unlikely to clog anything.

Now if you are shaving a belly button length beard, that's a different matter.

Never thought of that before.... but unless you are shaving a grown beard, I wouldnt think the tiny hair particles wouldnt be a problem. I would try to keep lng hair out of the system.

Most boats the sink drains are short, straight and right to the ocean so chances of clogging are small. But check the run from your sink to the through-hull as each boat is different.

I would think the shower more likely to clog as most showers have to pump overboard.

If your wife's leg hairs are long enough to clog the drains then I don't want to comment further. Personally I let my chin whiskers grow and cut them whenever they get too warm. Not having to scrape chin whiskers off every morning was the first thing I left behind when I stopped punching a clock every day. When I cut my beard or my hair I do it outside on a windy day. I don't have leftovers if it is windy.

Awesome thanks for the response. Honestly on vacation I don't shave until my wife yells at me that my beard is too long so maybe i'll err on the side of caution and shave into a cup full of water.

Im just glad that I don't have to tell her that she has to jump through hoops to shave her legs. Some things you're just better off not asking your wife to do.
What's that dumb saying wives say..."happy wife happy life"... or some crap like that....I don't know I wasn't really listening when she told me

Or as we say down south, "If momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy."

I try to shave every third day or so when we're out. If I let to go too long, then it's more of a PITA when I do shave. I use the head vanity sink. No issues so far.

Use the sink if it drains straight down (most do) as it will not clog. Do not use the shower if it pumps out or drains to the bilge.

Just keep in mind that it is prolly against the law to discharge facial or leg hair stubs overboard within no-discharge zones....

We are a live aboard! Sink drains tend to be short and straight, its the shower that is the problem. Its the longer head/scalp hair that causes the problem. Both my wife and I have long hair which tends to blog the drain. Shaving has never been an issue for either of us.

Not an issue, as mentioned sink drains are straight shots, unlike houses with traps. The traps are there to stop sewer gases from coming back up. Not the same in a boat. Never use Draino on a boat.
