My advice is to NOT go to your friendly DIY hardware store! Instead, go to a specialty fastener shop, for they will have a far better selection of thread sizes, materials and head designs.

And some sort of anti seize will make it easy the next time you need to do this job.

Finally, FWIW I once broke off one of the screws in a Johnson pump. Being in a remote area, had no access to a drill press, and as expected, stuffed up drilling out the stub. But, there was adequate meat in the pump wall to then tap for the next larger size (an American 6-32 IIRC). Worked for years...
