Salt Water and Brass Fittings

How reliable/safe are standard water fittings from a hardware store? (I presume they are brass). I know that brass does de-zincify, but above the water line can it be used or is it a definite no-no?

not a good idea for salt water regardless of whether or it it is above the WL
