RO Pressure Vessel end cap removal
I have a Codeline 2.5 x 40" pressure vessel installed in 1986 and not used for at least 15 years. I'm trying to figure out how to open it up to get the old membrane out. Attached are pictures showing : end cap, half moon clamp that hold the ends on, and the tube end with fittings. Can anyone help?

Re: RO Pressure Vessel end cap removal
Normally you should find two retaining pieces that the half moon clamp secures in place. They fit into a grove and are about the diameter of a 12 gauge wire although they are not round. I looked for some pictures of a 1995 code line that I used to have but I must of deleted them. I found it impossible to find parts for as the particular model I had. I had messed up the rings trying to get the cap off.

I'll see if I can get them out tomorrow. Are they just a full circle snap ring?

Re: RO Pressure Vessel end cap removal
We change those out all time....here's the procedure.
Remove the end plug retaining 1/2 moons from both ends of the end plugs.
Now here is where it gets tricky, try to pull out the end plug if you can. but chances are it will not budge. So then you need to push in on one end plug, which will then push the other side end plug out. Now when I say "push", I really mean whack the it with a rubber mallet. We usually need to use a piece of wood with a rag protecting it again the end cap and give it some healthy smacks with a hammer. As the end plugs forces in, it will transfer the movement through the rigid RO Membrane and push out the oposite end plug. With one plug out, use the RO Membrane to then push backwards on the plug you were smacking and it should come out also.
Good luck

They were two half circle snap rings In mine but listen to Rich, it sounds like yours don't have them. You should be ready to drive them out..

Re: RO Pressure Vessel end cap removal
Some makers recommend running unit under pressure to blow out the membrane. No personal experience. R

Re: RO Pressure Vessel end cap removal
If you can pressurize it... that would work. Water holds little energy... unlike air or gas. If you try this be sure to flood it to get all air out first!

Not the case. It works. The reason that it works is, while it may be high pressure, the small volume of water and no compressed air behind it.

Of course it "works" it can also make a damn mess and can spray sea water all over electrical stuff. Want to see photos because I got them.
My problem is that when I give advice to clients on how to do something I'm liable if I give them risky things to do and try and something goes wrong, so I'm careful. Heck if they hit their thumb with the mallet they could try and blame me....ha ha ah
However, free advice on the internet has no such liability. So sure....run the system up to max psi and hope all goes well, heck it will be fun. But you won't see me put that in my water maker manual no matter how fun it would be to try.

Yeah, that makes sense. I would definitely try the hammer first!

I do see your problem.
Sure things can get messy. I'm sure your pics will attest to that. And it's good that you point that out.
I have also made a living dealing with RO, on an industrial scale since 1974. Your point is well taken that not everyone is aware of the potential problems if their attack is not well thought out. Nonetheless, if when pressurizing the vessel is the most workable option, then it works. There is no need to take the pressure up to the max PSI as you say. It will come out before it gets that high. As far as being "fun to try", I can only assume that you have not.
