Most of us like hot water for many purposes, but see no reason to heat it if it is already hot. That is why they are usually referred to as water heaters, not as hot water heaters. If anyone wants to hear an old standard tale about clean dishes (rather than showers) just ask, and I will tell it.

Down South, they are Hot water heaters, just like that thing in the garden is a hose pipe.

50 degrees N is down south? Or are you talking the south of England? Or the OP.

Just kidding, I think most or many of us have called them hot water heaters at one time or another, and then been chided by someone for saying it. It is one of the hazards of a common language with many dialects and even more idioms. What is the well known quote from Churchill about England and the US? Was it two nations divided by a common language? Technically, you connect your garden hose, or hose pipe, to a bib, but who ever calls it that?

For those of us (north of 50) who heat the water in our hot water heater tank by stove and electric have to think about the hot of the stove can be greater than the setting of the electric. The little red reset button has to be reachable. without removing the fridge and the plumbing behind it.
