Is this tank a vertacle or horizontal tank?

I go to the local gas company where I'm at and they will service your tanks or anything else you need.

Currently in Liberal Kansas I refill a 30# bottle for just under $15. I had a new one last week and they said it needed to be purged because it was new. They did this with another bottle which had a regulator on it.

The cost was still just under $15 for purging and filling.




Some places can really stick it to you. Especialy if they are the only place around.

I should have looked in on this thread earlier. The reason that the new safety features are being introduced is for protection. It was never considered that somenone would try filling from one tank to another. It' a very dangerouse practice. In fact one of these type stories is to be found in the Darwin awards.
I am still often amazed that in the land of where you can sue a company because the cup of coffee was hot, still can have those that choose to do some really dangerous things.

I spent a number of years project managing the design and construction of port facilities and seatankers for the distribution of bulk LPG. Safety refreshers on the hazards of handling LPG were routine and compulsory for everyone and included movies of accidents and of demonstrations, etc.

No one will ever find me manually decanting between cylinders. Is certainly real Darwin territory if it goes wrong .

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend anyones sensibilities here. I was just answering the original posters question as to whether or not it could be done. I probably sounded a little too cavalier about the method. I am well aware of the safety aspect. I service by weight. The The OPD valves were introduced because the servicing agencies were sometimes overfilling the bottles. The valve makes it idiot proof. However it's just a float valve (like a carburetor or toilet float that never fail) and if the bottle is not weighed you aren't really sure of the fill. The servicers here just fill until shutoff and read the fluid meter for the bill. As to the $100 figure for the conversion I mentioned, that was for three bottles and probably a re-certification and fill so thats more in line with with the price someone else quoted. I am in fact converting to the OPD but more for the liability than anything else. I really think it's much more serious how it's stored and used on a boat but that's another thread.

Basically the Gas Man who filled my cylinder today told me that you need a tank designed for liquid service to refill a tank.

Seems that if you are storing a small enough tank to be able to do this at sea it would be even more practical to connect the larger correct tank to the grill and then store it when your through.
