Raritan won't suck up or pump outside water

Summer start up blues: Boat stored all winter in high freezing conditions. Was anti-freezed. Will pump "fluids" and other nasty stuff if I pour a glass of water into the bowl when it's in "dry" mode, but when I turn the valve to accept water from outside, it sucks on the upward stroke OK, but then it feels like I'm pumping compressed air and normal hand pressure can't make it do any of the downward stroke. Inlet valve is open. New condition to me ! Any ideas as to what might be the problem ? Thanks.

Actually you're sucking against a vacuum.
The lever has a hook shaped arm on the inside which opens a suction valve allowing flush water in. The valve is staying shut, probably because of the lever breaking off.

I think Gilana is on the right track. Open up the valve and take a look.
You did open the seacock?

Re: Raritan won't suck up or pump outside water

I don't think you are referring to the same unit as I have. I have a Raritan PHII.

At any rate I fixed it this afternoon. The ball, part 1201, was stuck down at the bottom of the inlet valve on the intake cylinder which is on the front side of the pump housing. I guess the pressure of the spring on it all winter had made it stick.

The question now is how I prevent that happening again next winter ?

Raritan PHII not pumping in water...will pump out - SailboatOwners.com

Same deal, service is the key.
