Re: PVC pipe instead of hose for head?

Rigid pipe below waterline is against ABYC codes.

Fwiw, ABYC standards aren't codes. Codes are mandatory regulations. standards are recommendations...compliance, while strongly recommended, is voluntary.

Now that we have that settled...can you cite the ABYC standard that recommends against rigid pipe below the waterline in any application?

When I was having my Gulfstar 37 surveyed years ago the surveyor looked at the pvc cockpit drain system (which was stock from factory) and told me that. I can see why too, as later the PVC pipe there did crack because the hull flexed more than the cockpit floor, causing one of the vertical PVC drain pipes to crack. I replaced this area and all similar piping areas with a section of black hose. SO there are very good reasons for this ABYC "recommendation".

Be sure to twist the PVC pipe as you are inserting it then hold in place at your registration marks for 30 seconds to ensure a solid leak free bond.

#1 - Christie's blue glue. A properly joined joint with the hot glue will NOT break. The pipe itself will break before it.

#2 - Flex - a few really short sections of tube will allow flex, and not pop joints.

#3- PVC will _NEVER_ smell. It doesn't in a house. It won't in a boat.

#4- Always listen to Peggy Hall, 'cause she's the #1 expert in the world on this stuff.

Re: PVC pipe instead of hose for head?

If you had hose before and it didn't leak and you replaced the valve and now it leaks, it's not because of the hose. You did something wrong and need to fix that first. Changing to PVC won't solve your problem.

PVC is fine for straight runs and even turns if you use "waste" fittings. You need flexible connections (hose) to the head and holding tank and anywhere else there's a possibility of movement.

Re: PVC pipe instead of hose for head?

One trick we learned while out in the yard was using a heat gun to put gradual bends in the pipe itself. I agree with the yard as the fewer connectors you can add the better as those tend to fail faster than the pipe itself and never add a connector that you can't easily service.

What about the use of the black ABS pipe used in home for waste? Lots of sweep connectors and drain fittings.

Re: PVC pipe instead of hose for head?

Yes ABS is probably better. Has to be a reason landlubbers use it and not PVC for sewage in homes. Be sure to use the ABS cement, it is different than PVC cement.

Re: PVC pipe instead of hose for head?

Only homes I have seen that used ABS, had wheels under them at least down here PVC is usual for waste.
ABS of course uses different glue.

Re: PVC pipe instead of hose for head?

Abs is lighter and more brittle - I would not use it on a boat. PVC is stronger.
